Veg-O-Matic

The farmers market and my gardens make me so very happy. Right now the weather is outstanding for this time of year! I’m honestly sadder than normal this year about the thought of this beautiful bounty of green and colorful goodness being gone soon. I’ve been chopping and freezing and harvesting and storing away a lot of veggie goodness to cook with and get me through the winter. I keep hearing it’s going to be a doozy. Lucky for me, I’ve already paid the driveway plow guy!

Awesome veggie harvest. Kale, swiss chard, yellow tomatoes, carrots, and a broccoli sprig.

Freshie fresh coleslaw from the market, and my garden. The annual growing of the mini red cabbage always yields a fall batch of awesome.

Yesterday evenings garden harvest. Lots of lovely little leeks, an amazing amount of fennel seed, and a couple peppers. Lots more out there still.

Leek soup ala my garden and the farmers market in the crock pot.

Color of the Month Oct 2013 PINK

Well, I’ve been planning this one for awhile, well at least the vintage tablecloth part. Earlier this summer I found this amazing vintage tablecloth-pink roses and spider webs! Perfect for the month of Halloween. Super cute and slightly creepy all at the same time, yes please, this tablecloth is going into my personal collection for now.

Fave items: wonderful vintage tea towel (sidenote-I have a matching green tablecloth) Kitchen Caddy, teeny eeny speckled pink Imperial Ware melmac bowls! pig shot glasses, Easter chic Japan, pink leaf glasses, play iron, jello cups, and I adore the decal on that glass jar. LOTS of awesome vintage pink!

Fave items: Of course, the spider web rose vintage tablecloth! Pink melmac, darling pink napkins, Glamalite glitter pink glasses, adorable tiny doily, and a rose blooming from my garden in OCT! What a table setting indeed!

Forty at the Farm

I’m sneaking an extra table setting into the blog this month. My oldest brother, Stephen, who just bought the farm, turned 40 this last week. I packed up a bag of vintage goodies from The Vintage Closet, nabbed some wicker chairs at a garage sale, baked a pie, and made some bbq and headed out for the farm. Check out the Rosa Lee Farms facebook page, I’ll be heading that up with each of my visits! https://www.facebook.com/RosaLeeFarms

BlogBQ

So, some of you who know me personally know about my allergy to tomatoes. Say what? Yep, allergic, they make me hivey and rashy and it’s just no fun. And yes, you have seen me post pics of ones I’ve grown. I still like to grow em, I just give them to friends or family when visiting.  Tomatoes are also a really tough thing to avoid in the world of food. It’s in so many of our foods, a standard on sandwiches, and of course it sneaks into all sorts of things in spice mixes and seasonings and it just feels endless when it comes to trying to avoid it altogether. It even shows up as lycopene here and there. For instance, I’ve found it in oatmeal and cereal. No, not kidding. I have to read every label of everything I buy. Which brings me to blogBQ. I’ve been messing around with all sorts of red pepper sauces since last summer, and this last weekend I decided I should try and make some sort of bbq sauce. I tried it today and…Success!

Homemade naan bread, spicy red pepper bbq chicken (no tomato!) and a few cool cuke slices from the farmers market! All atop a cozy fireplace vintage tea towel appropriate for this cool weather blast.

Now for the fun part, I’ll try and give you a recipe. I’m known for whipping things up in the kitchen and then when someone asks for a recipe I grimace a little and say well, I can tell you what I put in it but I don’t know what the measurements are. I’m really trying to keep track a little better. My mom actually has a little cookbook that she writes my “recipes” down in. We are trying to keep better track for my someday cookbook.  Sometimes I have to call her and have her remind me of what I put in something. Red Pepper sauce- 3-4 red peppers 1 onion 4 cloves garlic small bunch thai basil (or regular) 1/4 cup olive oil *Chop and blend all ingredients in the blender/food processor. *Cook in crockpot for a few hours, until is is deep red and starting to cook down I cooled and waited a day until I could run to the store for the rest of the ingredients I thought I needed. I also usually add more basil and parmesan cheese to the mix. Then you can use it on pasta or as a pizza sauce etc. Freezes great too! Spicy Red Pepper BBQ Sauce- 2 cups red pepper sauce 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 1 tbsp spicy brown mustard 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 tbsp paprika 1/2 tbsp ground chipotle pepper *Blend together, put in chicken or pork, cook in crockpot until meat falls apart, shred with fork. Done! Delicious. Magical. Forget you tomatoes! And I’m thinking for my meatless moods and meat free friends, bbq tofu sounds pretty tasty too! What do ya think?

Farm Fresh!

Huge Congrats to my brother, Stephen and his wife, who just closed on this 11 acre farm! I’m super excited! Can’t wait for the orchard, barn sales, roadside stand, and all the other stuff I can help with or dream up. SO much work to do but so much awesomeness to think about!  It’s truly a beautiful piece of property. The first time my brother mentioned this property to me there was a magical sparkle in his eye. I can’t wait to see it come back to life as intended, and then some! And hey, maybe I can even keep a “couple” vintage chairs in the barn?

Farm Stand Friday and Saturday Salsa

Since I took yesterday off-yes it’s a miracle, I took a day off! I snuck off to the cottage Thursday night and kicked off the weekend with some of my favorite activities. Farmers market, Bonnie Doon’s, stopped at a few sales, and of course my favorite little apple orchard. So, here’s my annual Saturday Salsa post along with my annual apple orchard post!  We grabbed a medium bag of Early Macintosh, Gala and Honeycrisp apples. Great for snacking, pies, and salads! Yum yum yum! And for Saturday Salsa! Mom grew the tomatillos for me in her cottage garden this year. They are outstanding! And there are so many more on the way! The rest of the goodies I got from the South Bend farmers market. I made a caldron of my tomato-less salsa this year.  Stock up time, if you haven’t been to your local farmers market it’s time to get there!

artgoodies Studio Tour!

I’ve shown snippets of my studio here and there over the years. Now here’s a closer look into my workspace. I made some changes this Spring adding more shelving and storage, and moved a few things around. I needed to be able to have more artgoodies inventory ready to ship so I had to figure out how to accommodate that. I’d say I’ve just about maxed out my studio. FYI, this is my basement, I love working from home. It doesn’t feel like a basement to me. Welcome to the land of artgoodies.

My workbench. Where I mix ink to print blocks, and some overflow of vintage thread is kept. Fun vintage treasures make for colorful little vignettes.

Here's my press. This is what I print my blocks on and how the designs you see are created. A fun little cut out window with vintage valance and quarky rooster make it more like home. Plus I can see right into the ironing overstock area!

Wall o squillow pillows! My grandma made this shelf back in the day, who knew it would fit so many pillows so well! I had to make an extension to fit more. Cabinets from the original family cottage serve as extra storage and a thrifted recliner gives me a place to rest or work on something comfortably.

Grandma's sewing machine, the one I learned to sew on! Serger, looking into another part of the studio with another sewing machine, vintage thread, another workstation, and printing press area. Plus look at those squillows hiding under the table.

Vintage fabric for miles, work counters, shipping is to the right but I didn't take a pic. Fabric cutting station at back left, and oodles of ready to ship shams!

Another view of the ironing/overstock area. Towels hang above, ready to be ironed and packaged. Plus a vintage iron is the only way to get the job done!

This is my overstock area. Dvd containers serve as the perfectly sized housing for ready to ship towels! Bins are labeled and organized so I can quickly pull orders and also see what I have in stock and what I need to print more of.

Many people have asked me, where on earth do you keep all your vintage goodies that you use for your color of the month? Well, here is a peek into "The Vintage Closet". This is where I keep my rotating selection of vintage from my online vintage shop http://vintagegoodies.etsy.com
